The Creede Gem and Mineral Show was founded by local store owner, Jennifer Inge. Her rock shop, Rare Things, is an absolute treasure. The Rock Warehouse has participated in this retail gem and mineral show for the last two years, and we will be there again this year. Why? For one thing, it's a great show, but also there is no end to the recreational activities and the fun of exploring the quaint and cozy downtown area. Best of all, the show is held in an abandoned mine - you have to wear a coat inside even in August!
Creede, Colorado, started out as a boom town in 1890 when rich silver deposits were discovered nearby. By 1893, the town grew to over 10,000 people. The boom times ended in 1893 with the silver panic, but mining continued until 1985 when the last mine closed.
Although Creede is located in an isolated county of Colorado (Mineral County), it is once again thriving thanks to its setting, the wonderful shops and restaurants of its downtown area, and the great success of the Creede Repertory Theatre.
